Drifting into the New Year

Shot on Pentax 6x7 using a mixture of Portra 400 + Black and White film

Exactly one year ago today, I was here. Lying on this beach under this sunshine with approximately 3 film cameras and loads of medium format film in my beach bag. I remember the day I took these images. We woke up for the sunrise and spent our day eating fresh seafood and drinking my favorite mojito from a beach bar within walking distance of the shoreline. I remember taking great care to document each and every detail of one of my favorite pieces of earth. I can feel the salt spray in my face and feel the sun on my salty skin like it was yesterday.

This is our old home. Vero Beach, Florida. It's the place where we lived during our engagement, the place where I got my first real job out of Grad school, and the place where we decided together to make the move to where we live now on the Fresh Coast of Door County, Wisconsin. At the time, it was a very hard decision to make as we saw ourselves here in this sleepy beach town long-term when we moved here. We walked this beach almost every day for over two years and talked children, our future family, and our future together.

We know the waves, what birds fly through in what seasons, when the pompano run, how the spinning sharks love the winter, and this shoreline like the back of our hands. We watched the snowbirds flock to the beach in the "winter" and I always used to count my blessings that we lived in this paradise full-time.

I've always loved using December 31 as a day to just reflect not only on my year but on my life. I still can't believe I'm pregnant! It's literally the most exciting thing that has ever happened to me. EVER. Embarking on this journey feels like the biggest adventure of my life (and quite frankly I've been on a lot of adventures). 2016 will always hold such a special place in my heart as it's the year this baby was sent from heaven to me. I can feel the baby kick every day and every sleepless night brings me one more day closer to meeting him or her! Ahhhhh my heart is so full. 2017 is literally going to be the best year of my life.
