Travel beauty

This isn't your typical blog beauty post. This is for those well- seasoned travelers and those who maybe want to try new products.

I've done some serious traveling in my 20s by airplane, car, boat, and foot. My favorite type of traveling are those trips where you take only what you need in a backpack. As I'm packing for Australia and potential backpack trips we may take on that side of the world this year, I thought I would share some of my favorite go-to beauty products that I take along in my travel bag, even when I travel light.

My definition of beauty: I believe feeling beautiful is one of the most important things in life. True beauty in my opinion is when you feel beautiful. Usually the more dirty I get, the more beautiful I feel. I don't use these products below so other people think I'm beautiful, I use them because they truly make me feel beautiful. When I travel, I may have jeans on that I haven't washed in a week, dirty feet, and no running water, but, if my hair looks good in my opinion (usually wild, crazy, and curly), my face is clean and free of blemishes, and I smell good- who's to know the difference?

Basics: I always take toothbrush, toothpaste, and hair brush (sometimes I use my fingers when I'm in a pinch) when I've traveling. I did not include them in my post because you can buy those items in any country.

You wouldn't think that as a world traveler, one would be particular about what face soap or face lotion I used, but I am. Most of my favorite pictures I've ever taken are when I'm without makeup and in the middle of a crazy beautiful location that we've spent days traveling to. Many times due to my environment while traveling, I cannot control my sleep schedule, my diet, or if I have running water or not. These products keep my face as clear as possible even in humid climates. Maybe this isn't important to some people (and that's ok), but it's important to me because mirror and makeup usually don't make the backpacking list. I love having a photo of myself where we've traveled as a souvenir, and liking how I look in those photos.

Traveling light does not mean you have to sacrifice feeling beautiful!

Neutrogena Naturals face wash- I am totally in love with this face wash. It's mild, removes makeup, and is Paraben free. Paraben is a wax found in many liquids soaps and shampoos. It is guaranteed to clog your pores and cause breakouts on your face and scalp. Guaranteed. I am obsessed with not using any products with paraben on my face and in my hair if I can help it.

Cover Girl Smoothers SPF 15 face lotion- I've been using this stuff since college. By far my favorite product on this page. Slight tint (I use medium to dark tint) and SPF. I took a stock of this face lotion and my favorite deodorant to the Peace Corps. I love it and do not leave home without it.

Eye Cream- I am using Lancome eye cream right now, which is an absolute dream. Someone gave this to me. I love how it smells and feels when I put it on. I love washing my face on an international flight, and putting this on before I go to sleep. Huge help with that dry airplane air. Any eye cream will work though (paraben free that is). Keeping those bartenders checking my ID as long as possible. haha!

Any Mascara- This is what you call my guilty pleasure. Some swabs of this on my eyelashes and I feel dressed up, always.

Dry Shampoo- a must if you can't wash your hair for a few days. Keeps your hair from getting greasy. I've also heard some people use baby powder.  My favorite dry shampoo is Suave.

Biolage Shampoo and Conditioner- My favorite shampoo and the world's best conditioner.

Redken Volume Spray Mousse- I have curly hair and it always looks better with product in it. Also, I love having big hair. This is the first thing to get left behind though if I have to lighten my load-another guilty pleasure.

Sun Bum Cool Down Lotion- This is a company that is located in Cocoa Beach, FL. Having grown up on that beach, I love supporting them. When I use this lotion, I smell like I just came from the beach. It smells amazing. It's perfect for hot summer and dry winter days. I use it as an everyday lotion, and it has become part of my smell. Sounds weird but my cat will snuggle with any article of clothing that this has rubbed off on- like my bathrobe, and my husband goes crazy for me when I wear it. Living in Wisconsin now, I love having this smell that reminds me of living in Florida! I put some of this in a small travel container when I travel. Also, their sunscreen is the best. You can find their stuff usually in most surf shops, best place to visit is their website here.

Sun Bum Coconut Lip Balm SPF 30- they also make mango, banana, key lime, pink guava, and pomegranate. I have one in every pocket.

Oceane Perfume- My favorite perfume lately. I wore this on my wedding day. From Anthropologie.

Delapointe Shea Butter- Another product I do not leave home without. A company called: Celtic Sea Salt carries this product online. Shea butter is made from the shea nut grown in most countries in West Africa. I use this as a moisturizer in my hair, on my feet and hands, and we've used it to condition my husbands leather hiking boots-seriously. I always take it with me when I travel to combat the dry air while I 'm in flight.

Extra Tips:
I always take bar soap over liquid soap in my bag when I'm traveling. Usually liquid soap is just another liquid to try to get through security when I'd rather take perfume, bar soap lasts longer, and you can use bar soap to hand wash clothes if necessary. Also, I've noticed with liquid soap it takes more water to wash off that bar soap- slight problem when you are in an area where they have no running water. I use stick deodorant too. I try to take as few liquid products as possible.

I hope you enjoy my recommendations. Feel free to comment if you have any other suggestions on travel beauty. I'd love to hear them.
